“The blaze of the white light yanked me out of a sound sleep.”
This was the beginning line of a novel I had read about aliens back during my school days. However, it makes complete sense in present times. The unending notifications, the relentless calls, and hard to blink binge watches all resulting in the emission of the white/blue/yellow light that comes out of our mobile phones does more harm than good. To add to our woes, most of us spend long working hours in front of our laptop, courtesy this new normal.
While I was reading top investors and their journey of investing, they all mentioned Podcasts to be critical elements in their learning process. As I started listening to a few top ones, I realized it made for a completely different experience all together, apart from being a welcome break from our lighted screens. Initially, it was difficult as our minds are programmed to watch and read but not listen. There have been innumerable times when I have not let my family members, friends or my colleagues complete what they are saying in my haste to put my point ahead of them. Listening to the Podcasts appeared a great way to learn the art of listening again.
The biggest challenges I encountered were the constant distraction and the drifting of my mind while listening and the inability to recall key concepts after a day or so. I decided to combine it with an evening walk. Listening to 50-60 minute podcasts along with brisk walking had a great impact on the level of concentration. I was not only able to concentrate and listen better but also walk around 5 kilometers along the process. Post the podcast, I quickly use to open my Google Keep and jot down the key discussion points and summary of the ideas floated during the talk.
